Learn about local fisheries and enjoy fresh seafood Aug. 16
The Oregon Coast Aquarium, Oregon Sea Grant and the Hatfield Marine Science Center (HMSC) are teaming up to offer Fisheries Day Aug. 16. The day of activities taking place at both the Aquarium and HMSC will offer information about the crab and shrimp fisheries at the Aquarium and albacore tuna, salmon and sablefish fisheries at HMSC.
The idea came at a Scientist and Fisherman Exchange (SAFE) meeting last year, according to Kerry Carlin-Morgan, Aquarium Director of Public Programs. “One of our local fisherman talked about the need to educate the public about our local fisheries,” said Morgan. “Immediately after the meeting, we said, ‘he’s right!’ Now, what can we do about it?”
Morgan said the goal of Fisheries Day is to “Share the success and importance of our local fisheries with the community.”
Visitors will be able to see fishing gear and talk to fisherman about the local fishing industry. There will be opportunities to try on a survival suit
