A giant squid (Moroteuthis robusta) washed ashore near Yachats last week, on July 29. Responding to a call about the creature on the beach, Public Marine Education Specialist Bill Hanshumaker from Hatfield Marine Science Center drove to the site and collected the unusual specimen. According to Hanshumaker, robust clubhook squid are usually found offshore, and get their name from the “wicked hooks” on the ends of their six-foot arms. “I will be conducting a necropsy sometime during this winter season to try to determine its cause of death,” he said.
