Thorp appointed to port commission post

Modified: Friday, Jun 22nd, 2012

Bob Thorp
At its June 20 meeting, Port of Siuslaw commissioners appointed former port commissioner Bob Thorp to Position 5, following the death of commissioner Sally Owens earlier this month.

“They appointed Thorp because of his prior knowledge as past commissioner. He was someone who could step in without extensive training,” said Port Manager Robert Forsythe.

Position 5 is the same position Thorp held in the past.

After serving as commissioner from September 2007 through February 2010, Thorp resigned from the port, citing health reasons, which are now resolved.

Owens was appointed to fill Thorp’s position in March 2010 and was later elected in May 2011. Her term would have ended in June 2015.

“I’m really sorry to come back to the port under these circumstances,” said Thorp, adding that Owens brought special knowledge and expertise to the position.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve,” he said. “The port is very important to making Florence a destination.”

To honor Owens, who died after a long illness, commissioners voted Wednesday night to dedicate the conference room in its new port office at 100 Harbor St. in her memory.
