About 1,000 acres of brush were burned near the Presbyterian Church of the Siuslaw on Highway 101 Wednesday night, Oct. 3. Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue responded with 19 firefighters.
SVFR Fire Marshal Sean Barrett said it took the team about 10 minutes to contain the fire and about 30 minutes to extinguish it. He suspects the fire was started by a transientís campfire.
Firefighters were called back to the scene at 2:30 Thursday morning, when Florence Police Officer Brian Goss reported seeing flames again in the same area.
Barrett said the smaller fire, about 150 feet from the original blaze, was probably caused by earlier firefighting operations when embers were carried to other dry brush. No buildings were threatened. For the complete article see the 10-06-2012 issue.
