Wharf project a ‘go’

Posted: Friday, Dec 7th, 2012

On Thursday the Port of Siuslaw received its much-anticipated permit from the Army Corps of Engineers (COE) to begin the wharf improvement project, which was slated to begin Nov. 1.

In order to receive the permit, the port had to agree to changes to the project as requested by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) in a document submitted to COE last week.

According to Port Manager Robert Forsythe, the changes came as a surprise.

In June, NMFS had expressed concern that improvements to the wharf would increase the over-water footage of the 22,000-square-foot structure by 195 square feet. The concern was that the slight addition to the structure would increase the size of the shadow cast on the water, thus affecting fish habitat.

In September, the port and NMFS agreed to a mitigation plan that included removal, by hand or with hand tools, of derelict piles and debris in the intertidal area east of the seafood market on the docks.
