‘Hooked ever since’

Posted: Monday, Dec 31st, 2012

STEP hatchery manager Jack Armer gets ready to release a female coho salmon caught at the Munsel Creek trap in Florence.

It’s right under our noses, but many Florence residents do not realize that within city limits are a fish trap and hatchery and, just north of town on Ackerley Creek, a spawning channel. Most schoolchildren and their parents know, however, and so do the 110 members of the local Salmon Trout Enhancement Program (STEP), whose core group of active volunteers spends hundreds of hours each year to manage the operation.

One of those volunteers is STEP President Ron Caputo, who has held the office of president more than once.

“When I got here in 1993, I had been a long-time fisherman and I wanted to learn about fishing here. I joined STEP to find out what was going on in this local area and I’ve been hooked ever since,” he said.

Established by the Oregon legislature in 1981, STEP supports the fish management objectives of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW).
