Finding Sanctuary

Posted: Tuesday, Jan 15th, 2013

Peaches, a rescued cockatoo, now lives in a bird sanctuary started by Thomas Mosser, above, and Laura Beam.

Peaches bows her head. A little shy, the 14-year-old salmon-crested Moluccan cocktaoo munches a piece of papaya. From the looks of her, she’s been through hard times. Her cream-colored plumage is ragged and she appears a bit thin, but her calm, gentle manner shines through.

Now at a bird sanctuary, she seems right at home. New caretakers Laura Beam and Thomas Mosser have dedicated a corner of their building for Peaches at Premier Landscaping and Yard Care.

“Birds can be a real big responsibility and take a lot of commitment,” said Mosser, adding he is grateful that the bird’s owners cared enough to make sure the cockatoo went to a good home.

Some birds aren’t so lucky. Some owners, finding they are unable to care for their birds, let them loose in the wild.
