On Thursday morning Siuslaw High School senior Tyler Garcia was surprised, along with his classmates in Sean O’Mara’s government class, to see a contingent from the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3232 arrive to present Garcia with a check and certificate of merit for his audio-essay entry in VFW’s Voice of Democracy scholarship competition.
Garcia won the local post’s contest, then the district contest before going to state, where he earned fifth place for his essay and speech, “Is Our Constitution Still Relevant?”
“Tyler has been winning our contests for the past six years,” said Ben Foreman, VFW post and district 9 commander, adding that the high school senior began competing in middle school by submitting essays for VFW’s Patriot’s Pen essay-writing contest.
For this year’s high school level competition, Garcia won points for originality, content and delivery and received $850.
