Couples reveal ‘secrets’ to marital happiness

Posted: Tuesday, Feb 12th, 2013

Marge and Joe Zimmerman, married 45 years, above, and Sandy and Wes Mahling, right, married 32 years, will take part in the annual Ceremony of Renewal and Commitment at the Little Log Church and Museum in Yachats tomorrow.

It wasn’t love at first sight when Joe and Marge met in fifth grade. After all, it was only elementary school. But by 1963, when they attended Madison Township High School in Old Bridge, N.J., they began to take notice. They started to date their sophomore year and continued after graduation.

“We were voted ‘cutest couple,’” Marge says.

Their dedication obvious, Joe and Marge Zimmerman could still win the vote if it were held today.

They have decorated their home for Valentine’s Day. A flag emblazoned with a heart flutters in the front yard. Their red-painted door sports a heart-shaped wreath.

Joe was 19 years old and in college when the couple decided to marry. Marge, a few months older, was 20. In 1967, New Jersey law required written parental consent for boys under 21 and girls under 18.

Joe’s parents gave their OK and soon the teenaged Joe made a lifetime commitment to Marge.
