The Rev. David M. Knight, a Jesuit missionary from Memphis, Tenn., will return to Florence Feb. 23 and 24 to preside over the annual Lenten Renewal weekend sponsored by five local churches.

After conducting a mission last fall at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Knight said of his visit to Florence, “I come here and find an openness that you just don’t have everywhere. People are open and willing to hear different ideas.”

In line with that feeling, his Lenten message will focus on common goals, with the theme, “More United Than You Think!”

The Lenten Renewal weekend is based on bringing people of different faiths together in their shared beliefs.

“We all have the same common needs,” Knight said. “Sometimes when we get inured with rules, we forget about Jesus. Lent is a season of joy and real life. We’re looking forward to a new spring of ecumenicalism that will bring us all together.

“It’s ripe for change. I think in 50 years all churches will be together.”

Knight says he realizes many people have been brought up to believe Lent is a sad time when you have to give up something.
