This was a red-letter day for western Lane County,” said Steve Olienyk, board chairman of Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue (SVFR), about honors bestowed last week during Lane Council of Governments’ (LCOG) appreciation dinner to celebrate civic and regional accomplishments. “We garnered two of five awards.”

Approximately 150 officials and business and community members from across the county attended the Feb. 28 event at Lane Community College in Eugene.

Fire Chief John Buchanan received the Outstanding Public Employee Award, and former Florence Mayor Phil Brubaker was named Outstanding Elected Official.

Both awards were given with an element of surprise: Buchanan’s with an unexpected musical performance; and Brubaker’s was the award itself — he thought he was there solely as co-presenter for Buchanan’s award.
