Poodle skirts, ponytails and ‘doo wop’

Posted: Friday, Apr 26th, 2013

Performers in poodle skirts, like Monica Cape-Lindelin, above left, and others in T-shirts and jeans recall the 1950s era in a production at the FEC. Laura Merz, Wally Sautter and Johanna Bonisteel are the music masters.

You’ll find plenty of poodle skirts, sweater sets and ponytails at the Community Chorus of Florence “Doo Wop at the Hop” concert on Sunday, April 28, at 2 p.m. on the Florence Events Center stage. There will be a few “greasers” too, looking slick with their black leather jackets and rolled up T-shirt sleeves loaded with packs of Camel cigarettes. But “no one” really smokes anymore. We know better. Instead we sing old 1950’s songs that we remember from our teen years or from our parents and oldies radio stations, songs like “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” or “A Teenager in Love,” “Sh-Boom,” “Book of Love” and many more.

Key figures in presenting this concert include musical director Laura Merz, pianist Johanna Bonisteel and Wally Sautter.

Laura Merz is a Florence native and has been involved in the performing arts since childhood.
