Only one seat on Siuslaw school board is contested

Posted: Friday, May 3rd, 2013

Helen Ritchie and Scott Salisbury participated in KCST’s broadcast forum with local candidates last week.

At a time when schools across the state are grappling with changes in mandates and funding, and the local school district is undergoing budget talks, three seats are open on the Siuslaw School District Board of Directors, positions 2, 4 and 6, all four-year terms.

Running unopposed for position 2 is John Barnett of Florence, a self-employed certified residential appraiser with no prior government experience.

The Position 4 candidate, also running unopposed, is incumbent Paul Burns, who is current board chairman and has been on the school board since 2005. Burns is a USDA Forest Service biologist.

Two contenders are vying for Position 6 on the Siuslaw school board: Helen Ritchie, Ph.D., and incumbent Scott Salisbury.

Ritchie and Salisbury were asked by the Siuslaw News to provide information about their candidacies, priorities for the district and their opinions about the local option levy for the school district, which is also on the May 21 ballot.
