Artist-surfer takes winning spot in competition

Posted: Friday, Jul 26th, 2013

Ava Glowacki of Florence shows her third-place winning entry in an art competition for which hundreds of entries from around the world were received.
Ava Glowacki, age 8-1/2, recently received third prize out of hundreds of entries from child artists in a competition sponsored by Cricket magazine. Contestants were asked to submit original artwork inspired by the sea. Ava’s entry was a vibrant mixed media representation of a sunset.

At home with her parents and younger brother Isaac in Florence, Ava surveyed her prize-winning work with not only the eye of an artist, but a budding surfer, a sport she shares with her father, Florence police detective Gabe Glowacki.

“For some people the ocean might look like it’s calm, for others it looks really rushing. There are no good waves in there, though. You can’t go surfing on that picture,” she stated with authority.
