Take a hike with the ODNRA
Posted: Friday, Jul 23rd, 2010

Guide program is part of pilot program in Oregon and Washington.

People traveling along Highway 101 between Florence and North Bend can take part in guided interpretive walks through the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area.

“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to share with visitors the many aspects of the Oregon Dunes,” said Gayle Gill, Interpretive Assistant for the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. “As one of the largest expanses of coastal sand dunes in the world it becomes such an incredible sense of place to many plants, animals and visitors,” Gill added.

Field Rangers are available at the Oregon Dunes Day Use site, located midway between Florence and Reedsport on Highway 101 near mile marker 201, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily to answer questions and provide information.

A one and a half hour guided hike through the Dunes is offered daily at 10 a.m. with additional short hikes offered on the hour. Preferred foot wear includes sturdy shoes.

The Field Rangers are part of a Forest Service Valuing Place pilot program taking place this summer at special places in Washington and Oregon national forests.

In addition to daily walks and talks at the Oregon Dunes Day Use Area, Field Guides will be staffing various other locations Friday through Sunday.
