Posted: Tuesday, Nov 6th, 2012

Katy Potter receives her medal after winning the individual women’s 4A state title on Saturday. Siuslaw assistant coach Jack Butler with state champions Edwin Vasquez, Hayden Schaffner, Mack Marbas, Mitchell Butler, individual 4A champion Matthew Campbell, Brian Schofield, Seth Campbell and head coach Chris Johnson.

After finishing second at last year’s state meet, Siuslaw senior Matthew Campbell, who has led the team all season, was close to finishing second again this year — this time to teammate Mitchell Butler in the final 1,000 yards.

“As soon as I saw [Mitchell] come up and get ahead of me, I found extra energy and used it to win,” Campbell said of the final leg, which pitted the two in a neck-and-neck race to the finish. After taking the lead, Campbell found himself trailing Butler in the last 150 yards, until Campbell was able to make a final sprint to claim the lead less than a second ahead of Butler.

“If you have to lose, it’s better to lose to a teamate,” said Butler.
