Though the official start to the Viking football season isn’t until next week, the practice field behind Siuslaw High School was a busy place all last week as youth and Viking conditioning camps kicked into high gear. Monday through Thursday, beginning at 3 p.m., aspiring Viks between grades 5 through 8 were on the field for the 17th annual Viking Youth Football Camp. Participants were taught fundamental football skills specific to Siuslaw’s state-title winning program, with current varsity players and coaches providing a hands-on education to prepare today’s young athletes for tomorrow’s Viking program. Then, starting at 6 p.m., frosh/soph players took the field for conditioning and skills development. Varsity players were in the weight room for the annual Lift-a-Thon fundraiser at 6 p.m. before heading to the practice field for conditioning. Siuslaw’s first varsity match-up will be Aug. 30, when Siuslaw hosts Scio. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. For the complete article see the 08-17-2013 issue.
