Posted: Friday, Jun 29th, 2012

HAYNES—Dorothy (Dottie) Haynes, 81, of Florence, passed away on June 23, 2012.

Dottie was born in Riverside, N.J., on Sept. 2, 1930, to Alvan and Mary Gerhard. She attended many grade schools throughout the East Coast in the Depression area, and graduated from Highline High School in Seattle, Wash., in 1948.

She married Mogens Norager in 1951, and they started their family of three daughters. He died in 1976.

After raising her three daughters, Dottie was most active as a travel agent in California for more than 17 years.

She became manager of the commercial department and, through this position in Palo Alto, Calif., she met and married her second husband, Ronald (Gene) Haynes.

They were married on the bow of their then home, the sloop “Whither Thou,” in Ghirardelli Square, San Francisco, in December 1978.

Dottie and her husband, Gene, moved to Florence in 2004 to “return to the sea” as she put it. They lived for 10 years on the sailboat in and out of the San Francisco Bay area until age and infirmities caught up with them.

Dottie was an accomplished writer, self-publishing two books and writing articles for some of the organizations to which she belonged in California. Before arthritis took over her hands, she proudly completed many needlecraft and cross-stitch projects.

Her first-born daughter, Karen, preceded her in death in 2005.

She is survived by her husband of 34 years, Gene, whom she considered her soul mate; her two younger daughters, Paula Kristine (Kris) and Greta Ann; three grandchildren, one great-granddaughter; one great-grandson; several stepchildren, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

At her request, there will be no service. She will be cremated and her ashes will be distributed in San Francisco Bay.

Burns’s Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
