SHEPHERDóDave Shepherd, 78, of Salem, Ore., and previously of Florence, passed away Aug. 9, 2013, surrounded by his family at a Salem hospital.
He was born Feb. 28, 1935, in Portland, Ore., to Earl Shepherd and Hazel Chaney Shepherd, and moved with his family to Florence when he was about 10 years old.
He attended Florence and Mapleton schools, as well as one year at Portland State and one year at Eugene Business College. He worked at various mills then went to work at the Florence post office as a window clerk for 33 years.
He married Delberta Ashford in 1961. They had two children, Debra Murray of Mt. Vernon, Wash., and Darryl Shepherd, of Florence, who survive him.
He and Delberta later separated. In 1987, he married Janet Inman Crandall, who survives him. Other survivors include: his brother, Bill, of Yachats; his sister, Sharon, of North Carolina; two step-daughters and seven step-grandchildren, all of Salem; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was involved in the American Rhododendron Society. He also operated a small rhododendron specialty nursery for many years and was well known for his expertise in this area.
A service of memories will be held Friday, Aug. 16, at Community Baptist Church, beginning at 2 p.m., with a reception following.
