SMARTóBertram Denis Smart went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Sept. 15, 2013.
Bert was born to Denis W. and Bessie M. (Slezak) Smart in Omaha, Neb., on Sept. 25, 1921. The family moved to Oakland, Calif., in the early 1920s where Bert attended schools, graduating from Oakland Technical High School and University of California, Berkeley.
He married Jean Marjorie Dyke on Jan. 3, 1942, and entered military service on Oct. 31, 1942. He served with the U.S. Army Signal Corp in the Pacific, particularly Okinawa, and was discharged in March 1946.
Bert worked in the family business, Smartís Auto Parts, serving the East Bay Area of California. He and his brother, Art, later bought the business from their parents and continued to operate it until 1970.
He then became a successful Real Estate broker for many years, and he also embarked on a third career of computer consulting, which he continued to pursue well into the 1980s.
Bert held a HAM radio license most of his adult life, was a superior bridge player, and loved building and flying model radio controlled aircraft. He also enjoyed fishing the many lakes around Florence with his son.
Bert was preceded in death by his parents, brother and two sons. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Jean; six grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
A memorial service will be held at the Community Baptist Church, 4590 Highway 101 in Florence, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28. Donations may be made to Community Baptist Church or Peace Harbor Hospice.
Burnsís Riverside Chapel is in charge of all arrangements.
