On Dec. 13, staff at Siuslaw Middle School notified the Florence Police Department that several of their students had been approached by a stranger and offered rides to school. The school also issued alerts to parents, and the Siuslaw News reported the incident.
The stranger was described as an “older adult male,” along with several descriptions of his car.
According to Lt. John Pitcher, police received several calls from citizens, most advising of a Florence resident who could be a suspect based on the suspect’s description and prior similar unreported behavior.
Det. Gabe Glowacki conducted the follow-up investigation and determined that Thomas C. Leith, 77, of Florence was the suspect who offered rides to the students. Leith was arrested yesterday, Dec. 20.
Police are not charging Leith with a criminal offense for approaching students; however, they are following through with other charges by other victims.
Leith has been charged with stalking, invasion of personal privacy and four counts of criminal trespass.
Florence police are still investigating additional complaints against Leith. For the complete article see the 12-21-2013 issue.
