By 10 a.m., 8-year-old Wallace Cox said his arms were getting tired from pulling in so many fish from Cleawox Lake.
It was statewide Free Fishing Day, and it seemed that the trout had misinterpreted the memo, thinking it was a day to freely give themselves up to every hook that entered the water. Along the dock as well as the sandy banks, fishing nets were busy scooping up catches as members of Florence STEP assisted with unhooking the gaping mouths of trout.
“We want to encourage families to get outdoors and take advantage of what Oregon has to offer,” said STEP president Dean Hendricks, who helps coordinate volunteers from the group, which provides equipment,boat rides, fish cleaning and expertise.
