DUNES CITY — Dunes City has requested bids to repair the dam portage on the Siltcoos River Canoe Trail, but it is still in wait mode.
At last month’s meeting, city councilors agreed on a cap of $2,500 for repairs. Local companies had viewed the damage, but as of press time yesterday, had not submitted bids. Volunteer labor and materials have been sought to help reduce costs.
The city has contacted kayak and canoe clubs and other entities to assume responsibility for the structure, but, so far, there have been no takers.
“I have a feeling no one really wants to take this thing in the state of disrepair it’s in, so I think ... we need to go ahead ... to look at getting it fixed, whether we use tourist dollars or we use volunteer help. We need to get it fixed before the summer gets too far along,” said Councilor Ed Scarberry.
In fall 2011, the city learned the portage was damaged by corrosion, which posed a safety hazard to users.
