Independence Day 2012 fell right in the middle of the week, and still visitors flocked to Florence for a little sunshine and the promise of a good summer.
On the Fourth, Kiwanians and other volunteers launched almost 2,000 rubber ducks into the Siuslaw River in the annual Duck Race to raise money for academic scholarships for local students. Old Town Park was packed with families competing in the annual pie- and watermelon-eating contests. Shoppers wandered in and out of boutiques and restaurants and up and down the Port of Siuslaw boardwalk.
All in all it seemed like a laid-back holiday in honor of America’s birthday and the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
