The Vikings wasted no time getting the upper hand on the road in Newport Friday night, spreading the offense and keeping the Cubs’ defense off balance during a two-touchdown attack in the opening period.

Siuslaw’s first score came midway through the quarter, on a 19-yard pass from senior Jacob Thompson to sophomore receiver Billy Jones. The kick from Ryan Smith was good as the Viking defense went to work en route to holding Newport scoreless for the entire first period.

Meanwhile, Siuslaw’s offense continued to find openings in the Cubs’ defense, with sophomore runningback Christian Jakobsen breaching the end zone on an eight-yard scamper to make it 13-0.

In the second quarter, Newport’s defense stepped things up, holding Siuslaw away from the red zone for most of the period. The Cubs’ offense continued to struggle as the Vikings essentially eliminated Newport’s passing game, holding the Cubs to just 30 yards in the air.

Eventually, Newport was able to get on the board, with 2:55 remaining before the half, on a four-yard run.
