Sailors corner Cougars, miss Eagles

Posted: Friday, Sep 28th, 2012

Mapleton senior Liz Harry leaps for a kill during Tuesday’s four-set win over Crow.

After handing Lowell its first loss of the season, the Sailors hosted fourth-place Crow Tuesday, upsetting the Cougars in four games.

Mapleton came out strong in the opening set, handling Crow with a 10-point win, 25-15. Senior Kaitlynn Logan and junior Dani Simington paced the Sailors offensively, combining for 20 kills as Mapleton closed in on a potential sweep of Crow after taking the second set, 25-17.

The Cougars, one place ahead of the Sailors in the MWL standings, battled back in game three, taking advantage of Mapleton errors to come from behind and emerge with a narrow 26-24 win in extra points, fending off a sweep.

“We really worked to keep our communication up after losing the third game,” said Simington. “We started taking more and setting tougher. We wanted to make sure to win the fourth set.”

The Sailors took a quick lead on serving from Megan Green and kills from Logan that put Mapleton ahead 5-1. The Cougars stepped up their defense while finding open spots on the floor offensively, closing the gap and taking a 7-5 lead on a pair of aces.
