Mapleton School District students, parents and staff gathered this summer to install the first phase of the long awaited “Garden Classroom.”

Both Western Lane Community Foundation and Lowes Education and Charitable Foundation granted funds to the district to fulfill a vision of creating a place to teach science, math, health, literature, art and life skills through the hands-on experience of gardening.

Community member, Loren Fleming, built the cold frames, raised beds and working table; brothers, Chet and JD Geddes, built the tool shed; community members, Carl and Kathy West, donated soil and wood chips; and, finally, several families gathered to put it all in place.

The project, “From Seed to Table,” is now ready for the varied tasks to involve students throughout the district. Both teachers and after-school instructors plan to implement curriculum and activities with the Garden Classroom throughout the year.

Stay tuned for featured activities. — Submitted by Debra Fleming
