Reasons to ride

Posted: Friday, Sep 28th, 2012

Bob Lee and Dick Hett stopped in Florence, shown here at the Best Western Pier Point Inn, on their way to Mexico to raise funds for research and support. Both men have lost friends and family to cancer.

Bob Lee said he has good reasons to ride a bicycle from Vancouver, British Columbia, to Tijuana, Mexico: all the people who suffer from cancer or ALS or are facing the end of life.

He was in Florence last week to rest a bit before continuing on his third ride since 2001. By the time he heads back to fly home from San Diego, he will have completed 12,000 miles total over his three rides around the perimeter of the United States.

The fit 70-year-old has created an organization called Ride for 3 Reasons. His goal for this journey is to raise $1 million to benefit the American Cancer Society, the Les Turner ALS Foundation and hospice education in his home state of Illinois.

Since he left Vancouver in early September, more than $513,000 has been pledged. He believes when he enters Mexico in another six weeks, pledges will reach the million-dollar mark.

But money is only one aspect of his ride, said Lee. More important, he is satisfying a need to do something meaningful.

“This has become a passion ever since I saw Ted Koppel’s interview of Morrie Schwartz. It inspired me to pay it forward. Give back. Live with more compassion.”

Schwartz, a retired sociology professor, was featured in a best-selling book by Mitch Albom, “Tuesdays with Morrie,” which recounted Albom’s conversations with his professor who was dying of ALS, better known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
