Posted: Tuesday, Oct 2nd, 2012

Mack Marbas slips ahead of Reynolds High School, securing third place for a sweep of the top three finishes by Siuslaw at Saturday’s Woahink Invitational. Katy Potter crosses the finish, winning the girls race as her mom, Kelly, cheers her on.

Perfect weather highlighted a near-perfect finish for the Viking boys’ cross country team during Saturday’s Woahink Invitational, which brought more than 30 teams to compete in the varied course surrounding the Woahink Day Use area.

Fourteen schools, including divisions from some of the state’s top 1A through 5A schools, competed in the varsity boys’ race, with No.1-ranked Siuslaw coming in with high expectations.

Senior and returning Far West champion Matthew Campbell, who has been the team’s leader all season, once again paced himself among the top three before pulling away in the final stretch, overtaking Ian Stevens of Reynolds in the final 500 meters to finish a full 12 seconds ahead at 16:05.2 for the win.
