Jack Willard Steward

STEWARD—Jack Willard Steward, 87, of Florence, passed away Sept. 28, 2012.

Jack was born April 22, 1924, in Provolt, Ore., to Dorothy Stidham and Jack Steward.

He graduated from Grants Pass High School and served in the Navy from 1942 to 1946. He graduated from Oregon State University in 1949 and was a life member of the OSU Alumni Association as well as a member of Pi Kappa Phi Frater-nity.

Jack married college sweetheart Carolyn Cramer in Portland, Ore., on Sept. 10, 1950. They lived in Salem, Eugene, and then retired to Florence in 1987.

Jack’s career began at J.C. Penney Co. in Salem, where he worked from 1950 to 1956. He was employed by the state of Oregon from 1956 until retirement in 1987, the last 26 years as personnel director at the University of Oregon.

He retired as a major from the Air Force Reserve.

Jack was active in Pacific Northwest Personnel Manage-ment Association and the College and University Personnel Association, filling various offices in both organizations. He was active as an alumnus in his fraternity, serving on the National Council for many years and as national president from 1970 to 1972.

He was awarded several citations by his fraternity, including its highest honor, Mr. Pi Kappa Phi. When Jack retired and moved to Florence in 1987, he joined the Florence Elks Lodge and became active in the lodge, serving as its exalted ruler in 1991 and receiving its highest honor, Elk of the Year, for 1993-94.

Jack is survived by his wife, Carolyn; his son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Ann Steward; his daughter and son-in-law, Karen Steward Nolan and Peter Nolan; his granddaughters Stephanie Steward Barbaran, Adeline and Ashby Steward Nolan, Laura Christensen, and Andrea Jordheim; and great-grandsons Hayden and Blaine Jordheim.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Florence Elks Lodge Scholarship Fund.

A memorial celebration will be held Sunday, Oct. 7, beginning at 1 p.m., at the Florence Elks Lodge. Burns’s Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
