Charles (Charlie) Elles

Posted: Friday, Oct 12th, 2012

ELLES—Charles (Charlie) Elles, 82, of Florence, passed away on Oct. 4, 2012, after fighting a long illness.

Charlie was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on May 4, 1930, to Charles Sr. and Anna Elles. He was raised in Philadelphia and graduated from LaSalle College with a bachelor of science degree in physics.

Charlie served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He worked for Hamner Electronics in New Jersey and was recruited to Siltec in Bromont, Quebec, where he was the manager of test engineering.

Colleagues remember him as always finding solutions to very difficult problems and fun to work with. He was recruited to Intel, in Santa Clara, Calif., to manage test engineering.

From there, he went to work for Torrex as elecronics manager, responsible for the design of all the circuitry required for the control and operation of a new and very complicated auto-mated semiconductor processing machine.

Charlie retired in 1994, to Cambria, Calif., where he enjoyed his hobby of HO model trains and travel. After visiting the central coast of Oregon, he moved here in 2007 with his wife, Mary (they recently celebrated their 29th anniversary).

He enjoyed walking on the beach, playing with his dog Mickey, carpentry, exploring areas of interest in his newly adopted state and pursuing his dream of building his HO model railroad platform.

Charlie is survived by his wife, Mary; his children: Mike (Barbara) Elles, Chuck (Sandra) Elles, Paul (Michelle) Elles, Joan (John) DeWitt and James Gaglione; eight grandchildren; and his brother, Richard (Melanie) Elles.

Charlie also leaves behind his beloved pets, Mickey and Missy. He was preceded in death by both parents, Charles Sr. and Anna Elles.

A memorial celebration of his life will be held Monday, Oct. 15, at Burns’s Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home, beginning at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Peace Harbor Hospice in Florence or

the National Alzheimer’s Association.
