Growing smiles

Flower grower Chuck Getchell stops by the last of his dahlia crop for this year. The peak months are August and September for his “u-pick” blooms.

Chuck Getchell grows hundreds of varieties of dahlia. During the peak of the season, August through September, the front of his home north of Florence is awash in a sea of color.

He doesn’t grow the flowers just to please his wife, Margaret, or his children or grandchildren, but for the effect it has on others, some of whom he may never meet again.

“People really like to see them. Sometimes they stop by just to take photographs. Other times they pick bouquets,” said the 72-year-old Navy veteran.

Getchell has regular visitors in addition to travelers who spot his hand-lettered “U-Pick Flowers” sign on Highway 101. His flowers have even graced the occasional wedding.
