Joseph Henry Sr. has been elected to the Florence City Council. He will take office in January.
According to the Lane County Elections office, of the 622 write-in names, Henry took the majority with 186 votes. A spokeswoman at the Elections office said there were four pages of names from the write-in votes.
Results are technically unofficial until the vote is certified and Henry “signs on.”
Henry, 69, has lived in Florence since 1999. He retired from an international consumer mortgage company of which he was senior vice president and responsible for 400 branches and 1,600 employees. He is still a licensed mortgage originator. He is the president and treasurer of his church board and has served as officer and president of his homeowners’ association.
Henry said the position on city council is his first experience in public office. He has been doing some research, he said, studying the city’s goals, its charter, and its website. He has also been talking to residents, trying to assess their priorities. For the complete article see the 11-21-2012 issue.
