New season, coach for Viks

Jack Butler may be a new face as far as coaching goes, taking the helm of the Viking boys basketball team this season, but he’s no stranger to Siuslaw, the Vikings or the game of basketball. A member of the school’s basketball team in the mid-1980s, Butler is well-versed in Siuslaw tradition and its pursuits on the hardwood, a journey that has seen highs and lows over the last 15 years, from single-win seasons to Far West and Sky-Em titles en route to the state’s final four.

Three members from Siuslaw’s state play-offs teams between 2003 and 2005 — Josh Thomas-Dotson, Dylan Perry and Josh Richter— have joined Butler’s staff this season with a sigular purpose: Take the program to the next level.

“I just felt that since we were having a ‘changing of the guard,’ so to speak, it would be a good time to bring in some new blood,” said Butler, a self-professed Siuslaw athletics enthusiast who has followed the team closely. “This is a talented group. Athletic. Smart. Dedicated. No strangers to success in other sports.
