City’s comprehensive plan: Siuslaw Estuary Trail may make tracks

Posted: Tuesday, Nov 27th, 2012

An estuary trail has been in the Florence master plan for many years, and at the last council meeting, the city took one small step toward making it a reality.

Developing any land around the sensitive estuary is very complex, say city staff.

According to Mike Miller, public works director for the city, at the Nov. 19 council meeting, the estuary trail starts in the campground near the Port of Siuslaw. It winds west through estuary near the old middle school on Quince Street, near Munsel Creek and Redwood Street, and would likely end north of Gallagher Park.

City staff are ready to apply to the 2015-2018 Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) and Oregon Park and Recreation Department for grants to fund what would be known as the Siuslaw Estuary Trail. The Port of Siuslaw has agreed to partner with the city on the funding application.
