Burchell pleads guilty, gets probation

Posted: Friday, Nov 30th, 2012

Jeremy Burchell

Jeremy Floyd James Burchell pleaded guilty to two counts of criminal mistreatment in the first-degree last month in Lane County Circuit Court.

Burchell, 30, of Florence was arrested in May when his 3-year-old son was hospitalized with multiple injuries, including a broken arm and hand.

Burchell confessed to abusing his son as well as his 9-year-old stepson.

Burchellís home and family had been investigated in January after reports of child abuse, but no evidence was found at that time. The Department of Human Services, however, continued to monitor the home.

Right before his November trial date, Burchell pleaded guilty to the two charges of criminal mistreatment, one charge for his son and one for his stepson.

He was sentenced to five years supervised probation, with a long list of stipulations, and six months in jail, time considered served. He must also pay $400 in fines.
