Siuslaw meets resistance from Marshfield

Posted: Tuesday, Dec 4th, 2012

Junior center Kylie Brandt works the paint to lead Siuslaw in scoring with six points Monday night.

After sitting out last season, junior center Kylie Brandt returned to lead the Vikings during Monday’s season opener at home against future Far West opponent Marshfield.

For the Pirates, it was their second game of the season, giving them an edge in terms of cohesiveness on the offense. Defensively, Marshfield’s full-court press led to multiple turnovers, especially in the third quarter, during which Siuslaw went scoreless during a 21-point Pirates run.

“We played a very competitive first half against a very athletic team.” Siuslaw coach Aaron McNeill said of his team’s debut. “It was our first game, and we played like it, especially in the second half.”

Trailing 12-19 entering the third quarter, the Vikings struggled against the Pirates’ defensive adjustments and full-court presence.

“Marshfield was able to pressure us and it kept us from hitting shots in the third quarter,” said McNeill.
