Author brings mystery detectives back to life

Posted: Tuesday, Dec 4th, 2012

Above, publisher Ellen Traylor hosts a full house for first-time author, long-time television director and producer, Tom Cherones. Cherones has written a spoof on the old book series about young detectives, the Hardy Boys. During a reading last week, Cherones joked that his book is for “old people.” At left, Cherones does his “Clint Eastwood impression” for the audience during a reading from “The Hardly Boys.”
Tom Cherones, multiple award-winning director and producer of such popular TV shows as “Seinfeld,” “Welcome Back Kotter,” “News Radio” and “Caroline in the City,” now semi-retired to Florence, was in the spotlight himself during an informal gathering at the Florence Playhouse in Old Town last week.

Cherones answered questions from the audience before he read from several chapters of “The Hardly Boys: The Mystery of the Golden Goblet.” The book, the first in a series, is based on the Hardy Boys series about two young detectives dedicated to cracking mysteries.

In Cherones’ book, however, the protagonists, Tom and Billy, had been kidnapped and kept in a frozen sleep. Once freed from their “cryogeriatrically” induced suspended animation, the two are now in their 70s but still act and think like a couple of 1950s teenagers. Even their dad, who is in his 90s, is still on the scene.

Locals in the know may recognize a few characters in the story similar to Florence residents. The story is geared for the baby boomer generation and is floating around Hollywood looking for a potential movie or TV deal.

The evening at the playhouse was hosted by local publisher Ellen Traylor, owner of Port Hole Publications.

“The Mystery of the Golden Goblet” is available from Port Hole Books, 179 Laurel St. in Florence, as well as Amazon.com.
