The feeling of Christmas

Posted: Tuesday, Dec 4th, 2012

A young visitor from North Bend stopped by Sunday at the Florence Nativity Festival.

In seven years the Florence Nativity Festival, hosted by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), has grown from a one-day event exhibiting 119 nativity scenes to a three-day festival, with more than 390 crèches, tapestries and other forms of art depicting the birth of Christ. About 550 visitors of all ages attended last weekend to enjoy the sights, hear live music and munch on homemade cookies.

“It’s nice to bring the feeling of Christmas to people instead of the commercialism of the season,” said festival host Yvonne Suckow.

Vickie Kennedy, who originally brought the idea to Florence from her LDS ward in California, and four other committee members, prepared an exhibit that is also about relationships between family members and friends, and connections between cultures from all over the world.

A prized piece was easily overlooked among the hundreds of displays. A small, framed scene from France, it is decorated with quill designs (paper filigree) and dated 1831.

“We were lucky they trusted us with it,” committee member JoAnn Mower said with a smile.
