Siuslaw fishermen dissolve association; donate last of funds to STEP

Posted: Friday, Dec 7th, 2012

Representing the recently dissolved Siuslaw Fisherman’s Association at the Dec. 5 STEP meeting was Mark Moynihan, Bud Saulsgiver, Nan Osbon and Bill Dietrich. Saulsgiver and Dietrich have both served as president of the organization.

Their generosity was met with cheers and clapping at Wednesday night’s Salmon Trout Enhancement Program (STEP) meeting when the Siuslaw Fisherman’s Association presented the group with a $22,700 check. The money will benefit STEP’s efforts to improve habitat and native fish stocks and support education programs in area schools.

“This money will be spent here locally of course, and it will go toward fish and keeping fishing here sustainable for as long as we all live,” said STEP President Ron Caputo.

Although it was heartening news for STEP, the event was also tinged with a degree of sadness as it signaled the end of the non-profit Siuslaw Fisherman’s Association (SFA), which had worked since 2004 to bring a functioning ice plant back to the Port of Siuslaw, and with it, the group hoped, the return of a fishing fleet, fish buyers, associated jobs and a boost to the area’s economy.
