Other ceremonies at Saturday’s event were the ritual of Eight Bells, commemorating U.S. Guardsmen and women lost at sea, as well as award and certification ceremonies.

Representatives of the U.S. Coast Guard and its auxiliaries, including Capt. Kyle Beck of the Siuslaw Station, met in Florence Saturday for an important ceremony and the official change of command.

Incoming and outgoing auxiliary commanders conducted a formal exchange of the division flag and saber, a ritual that symbolizes the transfer of responsibility.

Many auxiliary members also were awarded certificates at the afternoon luncheon for their exemplary service.

The ceremonies had new meaning for the Florence area this year, since the former flotilla based here has been dissolved, and some auxiliary members have transferred to Winchester Bay.
