Most Florence residents who can claim longevity or history of any kind in this town can tell you a story about Stuart Johnston. Stuart had both longevity and history here, and he will be well-remembered by those who knew him. He died this month, just days before his 88th birthday, which would have been the auspicious date of 12-12-12.

He was a businessman, owner of Johnston Motor Company, a Ford and Mercury dealership, and would certainly take a place at the top of the list of the “movers and shakers” of this community.

He was an alumnus of Siuslaw High School. He graduated from Oregon State University and served two years war time in the U.S. Navy. He met his wife Mary at OSU and they married Sept. 25, 1948.

The couple eventually returned to Florence and Stu went to work with his dad, Ed Johnston, running the car garage and dealership.

Johnston Motor Company carries its own history. Its products are a local mainstay: If you drive through any city parking lot, you might notice that most of the local vehicles indicate they came from that company.
