JOHNSTON—A celebration of life for Stuart Johnston will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 5, at the Florence Events Center, 715 Quince St.
Johnston, 87, passed away Dec. 10 in his hometown of Florence.
He was born Dec. 12, 1924, in Portland, Ore., to Edwin and Elsie Johnston.
A resident of Florence since 1939, Johnston was the second-generation owner of Johnston Motor Company, founded by his father Edwin Johnston. He served on city council for nine years in the 1950s and ’60s, and was elected mayor in 1962, a position he held until 1970.
He also served as president of the Florence Booster Club, president of the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce, and was a Port of Siuslaw commissioner for two years.
He sat on boards for the Western Lane Community Foundation and the Siuslaw Pioneer Museum.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; and his four sons: Stuart, John, Brian and Adam, and their families.
