Those anticipating the establishment of a federally qualified health center (FQHC) in Florence can take heart that the idea hasn’t been dropped.
Al Levine of Lane County Mental Health, who was assigned in late 2012 with facilitating the start up of a local satellite or branch of the county’s FQHC, said last week that representatives from PeaceHealth Siuslaw Region, Options Counseling and the county have met and will continue to meet to work out the details of establishing such a center.
FQHC is a federal designation assigned to non-profit or public health care organizations serving medically underserved or uninsured populations. The centers qualify for a higher reimbursement rate from Medicare and Medicaid, as well as other benefits. They must offer a sliding fee scale and serve an underserved area or population.
