Bottom right, Councilor Paul Holman and wife Bev receive a plaque and a bouquet of flowers from Brubaker as thanks for their years of service.
A special dual council meeting was held at city hall Wednesday evening as the forum for the newly elected mayor and councilors to be sworn into office.

During the first meeting, councilors said goodbye to retiring councilor Paul Holman and Mayor Phil Brubaker, also retiring after 12 years of service to the city. There were moments of humor and sadness as each member on the dais made their thanks to a packed city hall.

“It’s reallly heartfelt to see all these people come to see me leave,” said Holman with a smile.

“I wish you ‘fair winds and following seas,’” said Brubaker to the incoming council.

He added, “I wish that the nutrition bars in your ‘go-to’ bags go stale,” referring to Florence’s potential for being isolated during weather or geologic emergencies.

The city has marked major progress in recent years putting an emergency management plan in place.

The new city council, ushered in during a second meeting, consists of Mayor Nola Xavier; Sue Roberts and Brian Jagoe in continuing terms as councilors; and newly elected Joshua Greene, a familiar face in city committees and a port commissioner, and Joe Henry Sr., new to city politics.

The new council meets again Jan. 9 and 10, at 5:30 p.m., to interview committee applicants. Its first regular council meeting is Jan. 22 at 7 p.m.
