Fire destroys Rhody Drive home

Posted: Tuesday, Jan 8th, 2013

Only one corner of the house remains standing. Both occupants safely escaped the fire.

Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue crews were called to a major home fire on Rhododendron Drive in the early hours of Monday, Jan. 7.

Twenty-two firefighters in five engines, a water tender and several support vehicles responded after 3 a.m. to 240 Rhododendron Drive, not far from the Peace Health hospital complex. Rhody Drive was closed to traffic until after 6 a.m.

The team from SVF&R was not able to save the home of Tony and Janice Robinson, renters of the riverside home.

According to Fire Marshal Sean Barrett, the 1200-square-foot single-family house was fully involved by the time fire crews arrived, but the occupants were not injured. The couple was alerted to the fire by their smoke alarm system and they managed to get out of the house safely. Volunteers with the Red Cross provided aid to the couple.

The house next door to the Robinsons’, 280 Rhododendron Drive, was also damaged, approximately $5,000 in fire damage. The home, which is owned by Mark and Cynthia Chandler, was a total loss.
