On Wednesday afternoon parents sat on the edges of their seats, their jaws clenched while they carefully listened to each question before searching their memories for the right answer. Fortunately, they were not contenders. Their children were, however, and seemed as calm and cool as seasoned professionals.
At stake was the Siuslaw Middle School championship for the National Geographic Bee. Earlier that day, a battle had already been fought and won at the elementary school.
Gathered in the middle school library, 10 students vied for the title, enduring rounds of questions about U.S. and world geography that had some adults shaking their heads.
