Swimming along

“Kids in our aquatic environment really need to know how to swim,” said Don Landstrom, a member of the board that has revitalized its efforts to open the Mapleton pool, which closed in October 2009 due to lack of funds.

Monthly events are planned for 2013, the first of which is already a success: a gourmet meal at the recently opened Homegrown Public House in Florence.

Chef and owner Kelsey Terry fondly remembers swimming in the pool as a youngster when, along with her brother and their friends, she would take a bus from Florence to Mapleton in the summer.

“It was a good experience. We all learned to swim there,” Terry recalled. “It was so much fun. It’s sad to see the facility not being used. I think it would be good to move toward giving kids more things to do.”

To support the pool effort, the chef is creating an extravagant evening of music and food. Tickets, at $75 per person, have already sold out for the Jan. 21 event.
