William "Bill" Peerson

Posted: Friday, Jan 25th, 2013

PEERSONóWilliam (Bill) Peerson, 80, passed away Jan. 21, 2013, of age-related problems.

He was born to Charles and Dorothy Peerson on Feb. 29, 1932, in Eugene, Ore. He moved to Cushman when he was in the seventh grade and then into Florence when he married his best friend, Faye Mead, on Dec. 19, 1954.

He was employed by U.S. Plywood as a lathe operator for 34 years.

Since he was born on Feb. 29, he always liked to joke about how few birthdays he really had. According to him, he turned 20 in 2012, making his 80 years seem so much shorter. Bill enjoyed joking and he had an expressive sense of humor. He was a dedicated volunteer firefighter for more than 40 years, starting back when it was the Florence Fire Department. He loved being a volunteer firefighter and spent many hours at the fire hall doing what ever was needed.

He enjoyed art, rock hounding with his family (cutting many of the thunder eggs they found) and was extremely adept at cultivating bonsai plants, attending meetings often to learn all he could. At one time he had accumulated over 100 bonsai trees.

He is survived by his wife Faye; three sons: Steve, John and his wife Milana, all of Florence, and Don and his wife, Anne, of Independence, Ore.; granddaughter Tawnya Peerson of Florence; grandson Bill Lee of Eugene; two step-grandchildren, Elyse and Adam, both in the Independence area.

A memorial celebration service will be held at the Four Square Church on Saturday, Jan. 26, at 1 p.m.

Burnsís Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
