Viks close in on FWL mats

Posted: Friday, Jan 25th, 2013

Siuslaw sophomore Luke Carroll won both of his matches Thursday at 145 lbs.

With two of its top performers off the mats with illness, Siuslaw wrestling coach Neil Wartnik said he was excited to see how his younger wrestlers would step up to help fill the gaps.

He was pleased with the results.

“The kids did a great job,” Wartnik said of his team’s performance at the three-way dual meet at Sutherlin on Thursday night, where the Viks faced South Umpqua and Douglas.

“I was curious to see how our younger wrestlers would do without the presence of our seniors Hayden Miles and Ryan Connor,” Wartnik said. “We did well and won more matches than we lost.”

Luke Carroll and Travis Dahlberg led the team with two wins each to go 2-0 on the night at 145 lbs. and 152 lbs., respectively. Siuslaw also got upset wins from freshman Tyler Coolidge (125 lbs.), senior Alex Hadix (145 lbs.) and senior Cameron Matthew (170 lbs.).
